Buhari gets a strong warning for Border closure.
Babatunde Gbadamosi, the Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, said that the
continued closure of land borders by President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government would
threaten the country’s economy.
This came in the form of a strong warning to Buhari for the Border closure.
Babatunde Gbadamos gave the warning on Wednesday in Lagos, while speaking with journalists.
The President of the federal republic of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari on the 1st of November had approved the extension of the operation code-named, Exercise Swift Response.
But Gbadamosi said that the closure was having conflicting effects on the citizens both in Nigeria and in the neighboring countries.
It is clear that the agenda behind it is completely not for economic growth because it will affect the earning
capacity of people. If that happens, many people will not be able to meet their daily needs he said.
Nigeria and the neighboring countries that have built trust in us are now affected.
This closure will affect the economy, instead of improving it. The government needs to open the border so that
the economy can attract more trade and industries.
He urged Nigeria to take a cue from the developed countries with tight border controls without total lockdown.
If the government is acting against smuggling, there are ways of doing it without closing the border.
In the era of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, border closure was because of thieves who ran to hide in the Benin Republic.
However, the borders were reopened when the thieves got arrested and handed over to the authorities.
At that time, smuggling was still going on during, but it did not affect our economy, because it was well checked.
However, in that period we experienced the greatest rate of sustainable growth because
the country allowed trades to continue and the customs officials were also doing their jobs effectively,”
